Introduction

The Observatory of Sustainability of the Algarve Region for Tourism (OBSERVE) aims to be an instrument for monitoring and assessment of sustainability of the Algarve region, namely the effect of tourism activity. It supports decision making in pursuit of improving environmental quality, social equity, economic efficiency and increasing public awareness and citizen participation.

The main objective is to provide environmental, economic, socio-cultural and institutional performance indicators, which are available for viewing and download through the platform.

The OBSERVE team collects, organizes, systematizes and disseminates information from various thematic areas, present in the pillars: Environment, Sociocultural, Economic and Institutional. The data provided comes from official (primary) sources with production skills but also from secondary sources.

For each indicator, the metadata indicates the respective primary source, the source collection (secondary) and the period to which they relate. The indicators present in the platform are collected automatically and manually and the information to be provided over time will be updated by the same means. The indicators´ designation and information are based in the primary source.

OBSERVE aims to provide the processed information, where in the data are produced by specific sources. OBSERVE provides information on the platform free of charge, without any associated cost, it is an open platform of open access.

The work was carried out with the support of CRESC ALGARVE 2020 Operational Program (ALG-01-0246-FEDER-027503) between November 2017 and November 2019.
